Alexandra Burke has taken a stand by refusing to film a distressing scene in the new gritty drama, “Curfew.” The Independent reported that Burke, who is known for winning the fifth series of The X Factor and her successful singing career, made the decision after feeling uncomfortable with the content of the scene.
The drama, which airs on Paramount+, is set in a world governed by a new Women’s Safety Act where men are required to wear electronic tags and stay at home between 7pm and 7am. Burke plays the role of Helen, a high school teacher, in the series. Speaking to Radio Times, Burke disclosed that she initially signed onto the project without fully grasping the dark nature of some of the material involved.
“I remember reading [the script] and then finding out… a certain thing about Helen, which I don’t want to say… I remember thinking to myself, ‘God, this is going to be the most challenging role I’ve ever done’,” Burke shared in her interview.
Upon receiving more details about her character’s storyline, Burke expressed her concerns about certain aspects of the script. She explained, “There’s some things I don’t think I can do… I had to speak to the producer because I was like, ‘I don’t think I can do that with morals, and I don’t think that’s something that should be on TV.'”
The actress further elaborated on her discussion with the producer, revealing that they were receptive to her viewpoint and eventually decided to remove the particular scene from the series. Burke expressed gratitude for being heard and acknowledged her discomfort in portraying that part, stating, “Thank you, because I don’t think I could act that.”
In praising writer Joasia Goldyn for her collaborative approach, Burke highlighted the significance of being able to contribute her thoughts to the creative process. Despite the challenging nature of the role, Burke’s conscientious decision to prioritise her morals and values resonates with her fans and followers.
