According to ADHD UK, more than 80% of people with ADHD are not aware of their condition, highlighting the importance of ADHD Awareness Month in October to educate and raise awareness.
ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is characterised by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that can impact day-to-day functioning. Dr Selina Warlow, a specialist in ADHD and autism, notes that ADHD is often misunderstood, with symptoms extending beyond just hyperactivity. Consultant psychiatrist Dr Shyamal Mashru points out that ADHD can affect areas such as organisation, time management, and emotional regulation, leading to challenges in various aspects of life.
There are three types of ADHD, with symptoms varying from person to person. To diagnose ADHD in adults, specific criteria need to be met consistently. Inattentive symptoms may include difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, being easily distracted, and not following instructions. On the other hand, impulsive symptoms could manifest as acting without thinking, restlessness, excessive talking, and risky behaviour.
Individuals who suspect they may have ADHD are advised to reflect on their childhood behaviour and seek a professional assessment. Both Warlow and Mashru recommend consulting a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist for a formal assessment and tailored support, which could involve behavioural strategies or medication. The World Health Organisation and the Workgroup on Adult ADHD have developed a Self-Screening Tool to help indicate whether further clinical analysis for ADHD is necessary.
