Israeli Tanks Breach UN Peacekeeping Base in Lebanon
The United Nations reported that Israeli tanks forcibly entered a base belonging to its peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded the departure of the UN force from the area. The incident marks the latest accusation of Israeli violations and attacks denounced by even Israel’s own allies. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) revealed that two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of a base in a dawn raid on Sunday.
After the tanks departed, shells exploded 100 meters away, causing smoke to drift across the base and resulting in UN personnel falling ill. Despite wearing gas masks, 15 personnel required treatment, as stated by UNIFIL. In response, the Israeli military claimed that militants from the Iran-backed group Hezbollah had fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli troops, injuring 25 of them. The Israeli military contended that a tank, under heavy fire and assisting in evacuating casualties, unintentionally reversed into the UNIFIL compound.
The UN peacekeeping force expressed concern over the safety of peacekeepers, with five peacekeepers sustaining injuries from recent strikes, primarily attributed to Israeli forces according to UNIFIL. The deliberate targeting of peacekeepers was described as a severe violation of international humanitarian law and Resolution 1701, the basis for the mission. In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Netanyahu called for the withdrawal of UNIFIL from Hezbollah strongholds and combat zones to prevent terrorists from using them as human shields.
Furthermore, nearly 40 individuals were wounded in a drone strike in the city of Binyamina, with Israel attributing the attack to Hezbollah. Responding to heightened tensions, the United States announced the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) battery and troops to Israel for bolstering its air defences against potential ballistic missile threats from Iran. The US Defence Secretary authorised the deployment to reaffirm the commitment to Israel’s defence.
Italy, France, and Spain condemned reported Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers. However, Israel has urged UN peacekeepers to relocate further away from the border, alleging that Hezbollah exploits their presence for protection. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, reignited a year ago, has resulted in significant casualties and heightened regional tensions. Amidst the escalating violence, the Middle East remains on edge, awaiting potential retaliatory actions between Israel and Iran.
