Ireland’s women’s rugby team caused a major upset as they defeated world champions New Zealand 29-27 in their WXV1 clash in Vancouver. The victory came as replacement Erin King scored her second try, levelling the scores in the final minute of the game. Outside-half Dannah O’Brien then sealed the win with a nerve-wracking conversion through the uprights.
Despite New Zealand dominating possession throughout the match and having three tries disallowed by the TMO, Ireland capitalised on their opportunities and scored five tries. This victory is particularly impressive considering Ireland’s performance in the previous year when they competed in the lower-tier WXV3 competition and suffered a heavy defeat of 88-10 against England during the Women’s Six Nations.
The match saw a fast start from New Zealand as hooker Atlanta Lolohea scored the opening try after nine minutes. Ireland responded with flanker Aoife Wafer crossing the try line twice, with Neve Jones also scoring before halftime to give Ireland a surprising 17-10 lead. However, New Zealand managed to level the scores by halftime, with wing Katelyn Vahaakolo scoring a try right before the break.
In the second half, New Zealand briefly went ahead with a penalty from Renee Holmes. However, Ireland fought back with King’s first try and later closed the gap. Despite New Zealand regaining the lead with a try from Mererangi Paul and Holmes’ conversion, Ireland showed resilience by securing the winning try through King’s second effort.
Ireland’s next challenge will be against hosts Canada in their upcoming game on Saturday. This victory marks a significant milestone for the Irish team and sets the stage for an exciting WXV1 competition ahead.
