Minister ‘Absolutely Ready’ to Engage with Elon Musk Despite Investment Summit Absence
The Science and technology minister, in charge of social media and digital technology, has expressed his readiness to engage with Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, despite not having spoken to him since taking office in July. Peter Kyle denied reports suggesting that the Tesla chief had been snubbed by the UK government before its inaugural international investment summit, to which Mr. Musk was not invited. He clarified that the lack of an invitation was unrelated to Mr. Musk’s previous criticisms of Sir Keir Starmer during the summer.
During the summer, Mr. Musk posted a series of images, videos, and memes on social media related to the ongoing rioting in the UK, including tagging Sir Keir in several tweets questioning the protection of communities in Britain. However, Peter Kyle emphasised that Mr. Musk’s absence from the summit was not due to his criticism of the prime minister, stating that Mr. Musk does not typically attend such events. Regardless, Mr. Kyle expressed his preparedness to engage with Mr. Musk and discuss any potential global investments, although he is not currently aware of any.
In a recent interview with Times Radio, Peter Kyle commended Mr. Musk on the successful landing of the booster rocket, acknowledging it as a remarkable achievement. He further mentioned that the UK government has maintained good engagement with some of Mr. Musk’s companies. Despite Mr. Musk’s significant influence and expertise in areas such as social media, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, space travel, and the internet, there has yet to be direct communication between the minister and Mr. Musk.
Last summer, Downing Street criticised Mr. Musk for his tweets suggesting that “civil war is inevitable” in the UK, with Sir Keir’s spokesman condemning such remarks. The prime minister also refuted Mr. Musk’s claims of “two-tier policing” in Britain during the riots, asserting that all incidents were being handled appropriately. As Sir Keir Starmer convenes global business leaders at a summit in the City of London to attract private sector investment in the UK, he aims to reassure attendees of a stable government committed to long-term goals and investment opportunities.
After a challenging first 100 days in office, Sir Keir will advocate for increased private sector investment to rebuild the country and uphold its global standing. Business leaders from companies such as Blackrock, GSK, and Wayve are expected to attend the gathering at the Guildhall in London, where discussions on fostering economic growth and stability are anticipated. As the UK government seeks to boost investor confidence and create a conducive environment for sustainable development, engaging with global industry leaders like Elon Musk could be instrumental in achieving these objectives.
