The family of the late Murray Dowey from Dunblane expressed their immense gratitude following a successful charity football match held in his honour, raising an impressive £18,000 for charity. The event, known as ‘Murray’s Match,’ took place at Stirling Albion’s Forthbank Stadium and drew a crowd of over 1,000 attendees, including family, friends, Binos stars, and Scotland rugby internationals.
Murray tragically lost his life in December 2023 due to online exploitation in a sextortion scam. The match was held the day before what would have been Murray’s 17th birthday, with the funds raised going towards Back Onside, The Scott Martin Foundation, and Stirling Albion’s youth mental health programme. His proud mum, Ros Dowey, expressed her family’s deep appreciation for the support and effort put into organising the event.
The turnout and generosity of the community were overwhelming for Murray’s family and friends. Ros Dowey stated, “We’re so grateful for the time and hard work that so many people have put in to make the day happen.” She also mentioned that the event not only honoured Murray’s memory but would also make a difference in supporting young people struggling with mental health issues.
Stirling Albion captain Ross McGeachie commended the community’s unity for such an important cause, stating, “Seeing the community come together for such an important cause was incredibly moving.” The charity match featured a mix of professional footballers, rugby players, and Murray’s loved ones, including his father Mark and younger brother Evan. Notable participants included Scotland rugby player Duncan Weir and Stirling Albion’s Ross McGeachie and Cameron McKinley.
Former Dunblane High pupil and Dundee United midfielder Lewis O’Donnell also joined the event, showcasing his skills on the field.
