A Southern California school has made strides beyond the norm by planting a ‘Moon Tree’ cultivated from seeds that journeyed through space. On a day filled with cheer and applause, children clad in spacesuits and star-themed attire witnessed the planting of this extraordinary tree.
Known as the “Moon Tree,” this unique specimen was brought out in a wagon, flanked by students armed with shovels to assist in planting it at Santiago STEAM Magnet Elementary School in Lake Forest, California. The school, catering to around 500 students across K-12, was selected to receive a seedling for a giant sequoia that sprouted from seeds flown on NASA’s Artemis I Mission in 2022.
Emily Aguesse, a sixth-grader participating in the ceremony, expressed her amazement, stating, “It’s kind of crazy. I’ve always wanted to go to space, but this motivates it even more.” This isn’t the first time NASA has sent seeds into space for planting. In 1971, an astronaut from the Apollo 14 mission carried seeds that eventually grew into the first generation of Moon Trees, which were planted across states from Alabama to Washington.
While earlier seedlings were dispersed to national monuments, this recent batch has been allocated to schools and museums to enhance science and conservation education, bridging the gap between space exploration and Earth. Paul Propster, chief story architect at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, highlighted the significance of connecting the next generation of explorers through such initiatives.
The impact of space travel on plant growth remains a subject under scrutiny, with ongoing research by scientists. In 2022, NASA and the Forest Service sent nearly 2,000 seeds from various tree species on the unmanned Orion spacecraft, which orbited the moon and spent about four weeks in space. These seeds were then nurtured into young trees, including sycamores, sweetgums, Douglas firs, loblolly pines, and giant sequoias, aimed at public distribution through an application process.
Santiago, a magnet school focusing on science and technology, planted the Moon Tree in a space-themed garden adorned with stones painted by students. The task of caring for the Moon Tree has been entrusted to community volunteers, as it is anticipated to grow alongside the students for decades within a grove of eucalyptus trees shading the campus in South California.
Painted ropes encircled the ground to indicate the potential growth of the tree in 50 years – a visual representation of its lasting impact for generations to come. Liz Gibson, a parent with three children at the school, who chaired the NASA Moon Tree ceremony, remarked, “This tree will grow with the kids.”
As the Moon Tree takes root in Southern California, its symbolic journey from space to Earth exemplifies a harmonious blend of science, conservation, and education, leaving a legacy for the future.
