Alan Shearer has put forward a theory regarding the timing of England’s appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new manager. The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss is expected to be unveiled as the new England manager on Wednesday, making him the third non-Englishman to hold the post after Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Shearer believes that the Football Association acted swiftly to secure Tuchel due to the possibility of him becoming the manager of Manchester United in the near future. Tuchel has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season and had been linked with United should they part ways with Erik ten Hag. Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola was also considered for the role but the FA opted for Tuchel.
The decision to appoint a non-English manager may not sit well with some fans, but Shearer is supportive of the choice, emphasising Tuchel’s impressive CV and experience managing top-tier teams and players. Shearer highlighted the importance of bringing in a manager who can lead England to success on the international stage.
Despite English candidates like Lee Carsley and Graham Potter being overlooked, Shearer expressed a hope that the pathway for English coaches is not hindered by such decisions. He noted that it is crucial for the national team to have a manager who can deliver results, regardless of nationality.
Gary Lineker, another former England forward, shared Shearer’s sentiments about preferring an English coach but acknowledged the importance of appointing the best candidate for the job. Lineker supported Carsley as a potential successor to Gareth Southgate, citing his positive impact on the players and style of play.
Tuchel, known for his tactical acumen and fiery personality, has achieved success in various European leagues. Lineker praised Tuchel’s coaching abilities, highlighting his adaptability and strategic thinking.
