Hollywood icon Harrison Ford has shared some advice for actors who are actively avoiding Marvel roles, as he prepares to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) next year in the film “Captain America: Brave New World.” Ford, who will portray Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross – also known as Red Hulk – believes it would be “silly” for actors to disregard opportunities with Marvel considering the immense popularity of the studio’s films among audiences.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, the 82-year-old actor, known for his roles as Han Solo in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, expressed his positive outlook on participating in the superhero genre. He mentioned, “We’re silly if we sit around regretting the change and don’t participate. I’m participating in a new part of the business that, for me at least, I think is really producing some good experiences for an audience. I enjoy that.”
Ford acknowledged the evolving landscape of the film industry, stating, “I understand the appeal of other kinds of films besides the kind we made in the Eighties and Nineties.” He emphasised that change is inevitable and that embracing new opportunities is essential for growth and relevance in the industry.
The veteran actor’s comments come amidst criticism from some in the film industry, including director Quentin Tarantino, who have raised concerns about the impact of superhero films on traditional cinema and the concept of movie stars. However, Ford dismissed these notions, asserting, “I don’t think the question is whether or not there are any movie stars. There’s wonderful actors coming up every day.” He reiterated his passion for storytelling and emphasised his role as an actor who collaborates with others to create compelling narratives.
While Marvel has attracted top talent like Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Florence Pugh, and now Harrison Ford, criticism of the studio and its impact on cinema continues to persist. Notable filmmakers and actors, including Martin Scorsese, Jennifer Aniston, and James Cameron, have expressed their reservations about the dominance of superhero films in the industry. Even several actors who have worked within the MCU, such as Robert Downey Jr and Christian Bale, have shared candid thoughts about their experiences.
Ford’s upcoming foray into the Marvel Universe marks a significant moment in his illustrious career, demonstrating his willingness to embrace new challenges and contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of cinema. As he prepares to don the persona of Red Hulk in “Captain America: Brave New World,” the actor’s advice serves as a reminder of the importance of adaptation and openness to diverse opportunities within the entertainment industry.
