Experts issue warning over the heart disease symptoms women should look out for

Experts have raised concerns about the symptoms of heart disease that women should be aware of. Women are reportedly dying unnecessarily from heart disease in the UK due to being “under-diagnosed and under-treated”, according to academics contributing to the journal Heart. Despite cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the “number-one killer for women”, there are “sex disparities in everyday care of patients”.

There is a misconception that CVD is a “man’s disease” which has led to its under-recognition and under-treatment in women. Women often experience heart disease differently to men, so it is important to know what symptoms to look out for.

Here are seven key symptoms of heart disease in women:

1. Chest discomfort: Women may feel pressure, tightness, or a squeezing sensation in the chest, which can be mistaken for indigestion or anxiety.

2. Shortness of breath: Feeling unusually breathless during light activities or at rest could be a warning sign.

3. Unexplained fatigue: Persistent tiredness with no clear cause that lasts for days or weeks can indicate heart trouble.

4. Nausea or indigestion: Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, heartburn, or a feeling of fullness may be present.

5. Pain in unexpected areas: Discomfort in the back, neck, jaw, or stomach, especially if sudden, could be linked to heart disease.

6. Sweating: Unexplained sweating, particularly if sudden and accompanied by other symptoms, can be a red flag.

7. Palpitations: An irregular heartbeat or the sensation of a racing heart should not be ignored, especially if accompanied by dizziness or shortness of breath.

Experts advise that women should trust their instincts regarding their health and not hesitate to contact a GP if they experience any of these symptoms. Regular check-ups and open conversations about heart health can help identify risks early and improve outcomes.
