YouTube now tells you if videos were ‘captured with a camera’ – because so many are not

YouTube Introduces Feature to Identify Videos Captured with a Camera

YouTube has implemented a new feature that informs users when videos were “captured with a camera,” as a significant number of videos on the platform are not authentic recordings. The labels indicating the video source will appear beneath the videos along with a message stating “how this content was made.”

The introduction of these labels is in response to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating videos and the potential threat they pose. Experts have suggested that differentiating between real and AI-generated videos will help viewers avoid being misled by fabricated content.

These labels use a standard known as C2PA, which enables platforms to indicate whether a video has been edited or if it is genuine. Some camera manufacturers have already integrated this technology into their devices, allowing YouTube to automatically verify if a video was recorded using a physical camera.

Notably, videos that have been edited can still receive the “captured with a camera” tag. However, significant alterations that change the core nature or content of the video, or make it difficult to trace the video’s origin, will not be eligible for the label.

Previously, Google had provided YouTube users with an option to identify their videos as containing “altered or synthetic content,” enabling them to flag their AI-generated creations. The latest system works in reverse, empowering users to label their genuine videos accurately. Additionally, technical systems have been implemented to enhance the platform’s ability to detect misleading content.

This new feature aims to improve transparency and authenticity on the platform, safeguarding viewers from misinformation and deepfake videos. By providing users with clear information about the origin of videos, YouTube intends to enhance trust and credibility among its vast user base.

As YouTube continues to advance its technology and policies to combat misinformation, the implementation of these labels represents a proactive step towards promoting a more truthful and reliable online environment for users worldwide.
