Furthermore, Google announced a groundbreaking agreement with Kairos Power to procure energy from small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) set to launch by 2030. Amazon has also taken significant steps by signing three separate agreements to source nuclear power.

The exponential growth of energy consumption in data centres catering to AI and cryptocurrency sectors is a matter of concern. Predictions indicate that energy usage in these sectors is set to more than double between 2022 and 2026, according to the International Energy Agency. Notably, even a single search query on popular AI model ChatGPT reportedly consumes ten times more electricity than a Google search, ultimately contributing to a significant increase in energy consumption. This surge in energy-reliant projects poses a challenge for companies aiming to achieve their climate goals.
Google and Amazon have acknowledged their complex journey towards reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. Google reported a 13% rise in emissions between 2022 and 2023, attributing part of it to the energy-intensive nature of AI. Amazon, on the other hand, announced a three percent decrease in emissions during the same period, having already fulfilled its target of matching 100% of its electricity usage with renewable energy.
