‘My fiancé’s mum told me I’m not pure enough to wear white to my own wedding’

A woman’s future mother-in-law has stirred controversy by telling her she is not ‘pure’ enough to wear a white wedding dress on her big day, as reported by the Daily Record. The bride-to-be, a 32-year-old woman, shared her story on Reddit revealing her past struggles. She found herself pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s child, who then abandoned her when he learned about the pregnancy. Homeless and alone, a colleague offered her a place to stay where she later developed a bond with her colleague’s son, who supported her during her pregnancy and beyond.

Despite the challenges she faced, she focused on her health and her child. When she announced her engagement and later her pregnancy to her fiancé́, his parents expressed disapproval over having children out of wedlock. In an effort to appease his parents, the couple began planning their wedding. However, tensions escalated when the mother-in-law objected to her wearing a white wedding dress, citing her lack of ‘purity’ due to having children outside of marriage.

The bride-to-be stood her ground, explaining that tradition was not a priority for her and that wearing white held personal significance. The mother-in-law reacted strongly, resorting to name-calling and accusing the bride of sullying the sanctity of marriage. Eventually, the couple decided to postpone the wedding to save money for their third child and planned to elope with a small group of loved ones. Despite the challenges, the bride remained determined to have the wedding of her dreams, hoping her mother-in-law would disapprove.

Support flooded in online for the bride, with many empathising and offering encouragement. One commenter expressed that the bride deserved better treatment from her in-laws and wished for her happiness to continue. Another echoed similar sentiments, hoping for a beautiful wedding and happiness for the couple, despite the mother-in-law’s disapproval.

In the face of familial opposition and judgment, the bride-to-be’s story resonated with many who have faced similar challenges in their relationships. It serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience required to navigate family dynamics and societal expectations, especially when personal choices are questioned or criticised. Ultimately, the bride’s decision to prioritise her own values and happiness in the face of adversity is a testament to her courage and determination to create a meaningful wedding ceremony despite external pressures.
