Richard Branson Plans to Journey to the Stratosphere in a Balloon
Sir Richard Branson has announced his upcoming adventure where he will float above the Earth’s atmosphere in a balloon. He is set to be one of three pilots on the world’s first commercial stratospheric balloon flight. Joining him on this unique journey are company co-founders Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum, aboard Space Perspective’s maiden voyage planned for 2025.
The pressurised capsule for the flight will be powered by renewable hydrogen and will ascend gently to 20 miles above the Earth, reaching levels never before achieved in a commercial balloon flight. Future flights are expected to accommodate up to eight passengers, with seats available for $125,000 (£96,000).
Expressing his enthusiasm for the adventure, Sir Richard said, “Some of the most magnificent experiences of my life have happened on ballooning expeditions, and I’m excited to support Space Perspective in its journey. I’m passionate about adventure and helping fellow entrepreneurs reach their business dreams. I look forward to dusting off my old ballooning licence ahead of some magnificent test flights.”
Space Perspective revealed that over 1,800 reservations have already been made for their stratospheric balloon flight experiences. In September, a successful uncrewed test flight following the same trajectory and altitude as future voyages was completed. While the maiden crewed flight in 2025 does not have a specific date yet, the company assured it will happen within the year.
Jane Poynter expressed her admiration for Richard’s pioneering efforts in the ballooning industry, stating that it was a key inspiration for Space Perspective. The company aims to provide explorers with breathtaking views of the Earth against a black sky in a gentle manner made possible only by balloons.
Taber MacCallum also shared his excitement about Richard joining the crew as a co-pilot for the first manned flight, leveraging his extensive experience in ballooning to ensure a successful voyage. Sir Richard has not only offered his expertise but has also invested in Space Perspective along with other investors, which will accelerate the company’s development and test flight programme.
Space Perspective has raised a total of $100 million (£77 million) to date, with funding from various investors led by Prime Movers Lab and several venture capital funds such as LightShed Partners, E2MC, Base, Green Sands Equity, Kirenaga, and SpaceFund.
This ambitious project marks a significant milestone in commercial space travel, with Sir Richard Branson’s involvement adding to the anticipation and excitement surrounding the future of stratospheric balloon flights.
