Scots artist famed for unique murals releases book which helped him with ADHD

A Scottish artist, known for his distinctive murals, has recently published a book that he credits with helping him manage his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Tragic O’Hara, whose real name is Steven McIntyre, has garnered recognition for his mural artworks in various towns across Scotland, including a large Space Invader installation in his backyard.

Despite not being aware of his ADHD initially, Tragic O’Hara found that the process of writing his book, “A Practical Guide to Walrus Chasing,” was a transformative experience. The diagnosis of Combined ADHD provided him with a new perspective on his creative endeavours. He explains how the book served as an imaginary coping mechanism, unintentionally aiding him in dealing with the condition.

Reflecting on his journey, Tragic O’Hara shares, “In 2009 I started calling myself Tragic O’Hara. In 2021 I became a Professional Walrus Chaser. In 2024 I was diagnosed with Combined ADHD.” He elaborates on the origins of his book, inspired by his obsession with the song “I Am The Walrus” by The Beatles and the subsequent impact it had on him.

The artist delves into how his ADHD influenced his writing process, leading to the creation of a guide that navigates the complexities of the condition. He touches on the disbelief he faced initially due to misconceptions surrounding ADHD and education, ultimately utilising his skills to craft a survival guide tailored to his own experiences.

Tragic O’Hara’s book, “A Practical Guide to Walrus Chasing,” is available for pre-order on his website, tragicohara.com, with a general release scheduled for November 1st. Transitioning from his past as a graffiti artist, he now refers to himself as a “reformed vandal,” emphasising his growth and evolution as an artist.

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Tragic O’Hara actively engages in educational initiatives, conducting workshops for children and gaining recognition on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. His international acclaim includes a commission to design artwork for an American record label based on a video showcasing his painting skills.

The artist’s narrative unfolds as a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of creativity. Tragic O’Hara’s journey from street artist to published author underscores the profound impact of art as a conduit for personal growth and understanding.

In conclusion, Tragic O’Hara’s story epitomises the intersection of art, self-discovery, and mental health awareness, offering a beacon of hope and inspiration to creatives and individuals navigating similar challenges.
