A Georgia grand jury has indicted both a father and son in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder. The grand jury meeting in Winder charged 14-year-old Colt Gray with a total of 55 counts, including four counts of malice murder, four counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children. His father, Colin Gray, faces 29 counts, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless conduct.
The father and son are set to appear for arraignment on Nov. 21 to formally enter their pleas. Colin Gray is currently held in the Barrow County jail, while Colt Gray, charged as an adult, is detained in a juvenile center in Gainesville. Both have opted not to seek release on bail, with their legal representatives refraining from comment on the matter.
Investigators revealed that Colt Gray carried a semiautomatic assault-style rifle on the school bus, concealed in a bag, with the intention to carry out the shooting. Tragically, the incident resulted in the deaths of teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, as well as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Additionally, one teacher and eight students sustained injuries during the shooting.
Reports indicate that Colt Gray meticulously planned the attack, leaving a notebook with detailed instructions in his classroom. Concerns about his mental state had been raised earlier, with his parents reportedly arguing about securing guns and restricting Colt’s access to them.
Colin Gray, who similarly faces charges relating to the shooting, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. His custody of Colt and knowledge of his mental state have been called into question by prosecutors.
This latest development underscores the growing trend of holding parents accountable for their children’s actions in school shootings. Addressing the judge at a preliminary hearing for Colin Gray, District Attorney Brad Smith highlighted the father’s alleged role in providing firearms and ammunition to Colt. This indictment sheds light on the wider issue of gun violence in the United States and the importance of addressing mental health concerns among young individuals.
