McLaren boss, Zak Brown, has publicly rebuked Helmut Marko’s recent comments about Lando Norris’ mental strength, deeming them “inappropriate” and in “poor taste.” The controversy arose when Red Bull’s motorsport adviser, Marko, suggested that Norris might not have the mental fortitude needed to challenge Max Verstappen for the Formula One title.
Ahead of the upcoming US Grand Prix, Marko remarked that Norris, who has been candid about his struggles with mental health in the past, is “not the strongest mentally.” Brown, however, expressed disappointment with Marko’s comments, highlighting Norris’ role as an advocate for mental health awareness within the sport.
Brown stated, “Lando has been an ambassador for mental health. It is a serious issue that he has brought to the forefront and to make it okay to talk about. To choose to poke at that situation is pretty inappropriate and it sets us back 10 or 20 years.”
Norris, who secured a victory at the recent Singapore Grand Prix, currently trails Verstappen by 52 points with six races remaining in the season. Brown pointed out Norris’ recent performance, having narrowed the gap to Verstappen by 26 points over the past four races, and noted the upcoming sprint race in Austin offering additional points.
The McLaren team has also raised concerns about a device used by Red Bull that allows adjustments to the car’s setup between qualifying and the race, potentially contravening parc ferme rules. Brown urged the FIA to investigate the matter thoroughly to ensure fairness among all teams.
Responding to Brown’s statements, Christian Horner of Red Bull dismissed the concerns as “moaning from one of our rivals” and defended the device as compliant with regulations. Horner suggested that such controversies are common in Formula One as teams vie for advantage throughout the season.
