Demonstrators in France laud Gisèle Pélicot for her bravery in a distressing drug and rape trial. Elsa Labouret, a spokesperson for the women’s group “Osez le féminisme!” (Dare to be feminist!), emphasised the significance of Pélicot’s actions, stating, “She has decided to make this an emblematic trial.” Demonstrators raised concerns over the perceived leniency of the French justice system towards sexual violence and the pervasive fear of assault faced by women on a daily basis. Placards carried messages such as “Shame must change sides,” “Stop the denial,” and “We are all Gisele. Are you all Dominique???”
During the trial, Dominique Pélicot admitted to drugging his wife over nearly a decade and facilitating multiple instances of rape. He confessed to also sexually assaulting Gisèle, while the other 50 defendants claimed they either were manipulated by him or believed she was consenting. Following his arrest, Gisèle Pélicot divorced him, and the trial is anticipated to continue until December. The accused individuals span ages from 26 to 74, with many refuting the allegations brought forth by Gisèle Pélicot.
One of the demonstrators in Paris, Khalil Ndiaye, a student, expressed his admiration for Pélicot’s resilience, saying, “She decided to fight. And we’re all here today because she’s fighting and she’s inspiring us to fight, too.” The trial has sparked discussions about the prevalence of sexual violence and the importance of supporting survivors like Gisèle Pélicot.
