The former first minister will not receive an invitation to the service for her predecessor or any subsequent commemorative gatherings. Sources close to the late Alba Party leader stated that there is “not a chance in hell” of Sturgeon being on the guest list due to their public fallout six years ago. Salmond, aged 69, passed away last Saturday after suffering a heart attack while at a conference in Ohrid, North Macedonia. Funeral arrangements are underway for the end of the month, with a private service planned near Salmond’s Aberdeenshire home.
It is anticipated that a small private ceremony exclusively for family members will occur, followed by a larger memorial celebration later in the year or possibly in January for Salmond’s supporters, friends, and former colleagues. Sturgeon is reportedly not expected to be invited to either occasion. Friends of Sturgeon shared with the Sunday Mail that she is devastated by the loss of her former ally, despite their strained relationship in recent years. The rift between Salmond and Sturgeon emerged in 2018 amid allegations of sexual harassment against him, which Salmond denied, and a subsequent legal dispute with the Scottish Government.
Although Salmond was acquitted of several charges, including sexual assault allegations, the fallout between him and Sturgeon remained. The Alba Party is considering holding a public memorial, potentially on important dates such as Burns Night or St Andrew’s Day. Salmond’s body has been repatriated to Scotland, with various individuals, including businessman Sir Tom Hunter, contributing to the return. Christopher McEleny, Alba Party’s general secretary, expressed the party’s commitment to continuing Salmond’s pursuit of independence.
