The White House has refuted claims of any policy change regarding its support for Israel after President Joe Biden called for a ceasefire in Lebanon. Despite Biden’s recommendation for the Israeli government to “stop” its operations and his push for an immediate ceasefire, the administration maintains its stance in backing Israel.
Biden’s comments came in response to questions from reporters following his remarks on the federal response to Hurricane Helene. The President emphasised the need for a ceasefire amidst what has been termed as a limited ground offensive in Lebanon. Last week, the US and France announced a 21-day ceasefire deal along the Israeli-Lebanese border, aimed at ensuring safety for civilians.
In a joint statement, Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the importance of diplomacy to prevent further hostilities that could lead to a broader conflict. However, the Israeli government disavowed the agreement and proceeded with airstrikes targeting Hezbollah’s leadership in Lebanon.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed Biden’s remarks during a press briefing, stating that the US recognises Israel’s strategic purpose in preventing Hezbollah attacks on Israeli communities. She reiterated Israel’s right to self-defence against Hezbollah and Iran-backed groups, while expressing support for a ceasefire to facilitate diplomatic efforts and the safe return of citizens to their homes.
Jean-Pierre emphasized ongoing discussions with Israeli officials to achieve a diplomatic resolution. Despite Biden’s call for a ceasefire, the White House maintains its long-standing support for Israel’s right to self-defence while advocating for diplomatic solutions to the conflict. The situation in Lebanon continues to evolve as efforts are made to de-escalate tensions and promote peace in the region.
