A man caught with a dangerous improvised weapon outside The Time Capsule in Coatbridge has been sentenced to 27 months in jail. Sam McTaggart, 24, was found with a lighter that had two razor blades attached to it hidden inside a cigarette packet. The incident took place on July 28, and McTaggart, who was on bail at the time, admitted to having the offensive weapon.
Airdrie Sheriff Court heard that police officers observed McTaggart appearing nervous and evasive as he walked across the car park. Upon searching him, they discovered the modified lighter with razor blades in his trousers pocket, concealed in a cigarette packet. McTaggart claimed that he needed the weapon for protection due to mental health issues and his past experiences.
McTaggart has a criminal record that includes a 34-month sentence for various violent offences involving weapons like knives, a hammer, and broken bottles. Despite making progress under a drug treatment and testing order, his latest crime was deemed an unacceptable breach.
In court, Sheriff Derek Livingston noted McTaggart’s history of weapon-related incidents and stated that it seemed like he frequently carried weapons. McTaggart’s defence lawyer acknowledged his client’s progress but admitted that this offence warranted jail time.
