Leaders from the world’s top emerging economies have started arriving in Kazan, Russia, for the 16th Brics summit, hosted by president Vladimir Putin. This marks the first gathering of the bloc since its expansion last year. The three-day summit, commencing on Tuesday, will include 33 countries, with 24 represented at the leadership level, as per Russian media reports.
Among the esteemed attendees are China’s Xi Jinping, India’s Narendra Modi, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian. These leaders, along with others, will come together under the Brics umbrella, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, positioning themselves as a counterbalance to the Western-dominated G7.
Over the years, Brics has evolved from a loose association of emerging economies to a more solidified entity, with China driving much of the momentum and further bolstering by Russia since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The bloc expanded significantly last year, welcoming Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Egypt into its fold, with interest from other nations looking to join, potentially amplifying its economic influence.
China’s president Xi Jinping will be in attendance, led by India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the delicate diplomatic dance New Delhi is navigating between its ties with Russia and the West. South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa will also lead a substantial delegation to the summit, emphasising the event’s significance.
As a notable absence, Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had to cancel his trip due to a medical emergency, opting to participate via videoconference. This development underscores the health challenges faced by the esteemed leader, who is scheduled to host the G20 leaders’ summit later this year.
The expansion of Brics carries political implications, particularly in the context of China’s aspirations for increased global influence. With a focus on challenging the dominance of the US dollar in international trade, the summit under Putin’s stewardship aims to recalibrate the monetary and financial landscape to mitigate the impact of Western sanctions. Russia’s proposal for the Brics Cross-Border Payment Initiative and an alternative messaging system signify the group’s intent to fortify its economic independence.
This convergence of influential leaders and the strategic agenda set for the Brics summit in Kazan exemplifies the bloc’s evolving role in the global economic and geopolitical arena. As the world watches, the decisions and collaborations forged during this summit could have far-reaching implications for the international landscape.
