Dave Portnoy, the founder and owner of Barstool Sports, recently expressed his joy on social media after receiving a heartfelt letter from Taylor Swift. The singer had made a rare political statement by endorsing Kamala Harris for president, leading to significant backlash and criticism, including from Donald Trump himself who stated that he “hates” Swift for her political stance.
Despite being a Trump supporter, Portnoy, who is also a big fan of Swift, defended her decision to support Harris. In a Twitter post on September 11, he emphasised the importance of respecting others’ political views, stating, “How somebody votes will never change my opinion of a person.”
Portnoy had the opportunity to attend Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Miami on October 19, where he met Swift’s brother Austin and her mother Andrea. During the event, he was handed a personalised letter from Swift, which he later shared on Instagram. The letter, adorned with Swift’s personalised wax seal, expressed gratitude to Portnoy for his unwavering support and loyalty, especially during times when others did not stand by her.
In a video following the concert, Portnoy shared his enthusiasm for the event, describing it as “the time of [his] life” and praising Swift’s incredible talent on stage. He also thanked Swift for taking the time to write the letter, acknowledging the backlash he has faced from some Swift fans due to his political beliefs.
Notably, Swift, who recently announced a new book celebrating the Eras Tour, found herself in an unexpected position when her hit song “22” was used in a campaign video by Trump’s Team. The video featured prominent women associated with the Trump campaign lip-syncing to the song before declaring their support for Donald Trump.
While the political landscape continues to be divisive, Portnoy and Swift’s exchange serves as a reminder of the importance of mutual respect and support, even in the face of differing opinions. The interaction between the Barstool Sports founder and the music icon highlights the power of bridging political divides through shared admiration and appreciation.
