Anthony Davidson Urges F1 Authorities to Implement Changes Following Norris’s Battle with Verstappen
Former F1 driver and current Sky Sports F1 pundit, Anthony Davidson, has called on Formula 1 officials to make adjustments to the Circuit of the Americas following the contentious incident between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen during the US Grand Prix.
The incident in question occurred at turn 12 of the Austin circuit, where Norris overtook Verstappen by going off-track beyond the white lines. Despite being given a five-second penalty for the manoeuvre, Norris chose not to relinquish the position he gained.
Davidson has proposed the installation of a gravel trap on the outside of turn 12 to prevent such occurrences in the future. He highlighted the wide run-off area that currently exists, emphasising the need to challenge drivers who stray off the designated track limits.
Expressing his frustration with the situation, Davidson stated, “My final grip with all of this – they shouldn’t be out here at all. I hate this! Please Austin, circuit, whoever can make changes to this part of the track. Please, I beg you, put gravel there. Then none of this will be a talking point.”
Furthermore, Davidson supported the stewards’ decision to penalise Norris for overtaking off-track, citing consistency in their rulings throughout the weekend. He pointed out the distinction between Verstappen going off-track and Norris overtaking while off the circuit.
Following the race, Norris finished in fourth place, behind Verstappen who secured third position. Verstappen’s podium finish extended his championship lead to 57 points with five races remaining in the season.
The Formula 1 calendar now shifts its focus to the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City, where the battle for the championship title is expected to intensify. Davidson’s plea for changes at the Circuit of the Americas underscores the ongoing efforts to maintain fair play and uphold the integrity of the sport.
