Tourists have once again flocked to New York City’s iconic Vessel sculpture as it reopened to the public, now equipped with new safety measures in place to prevent further tragic incidents. The monumental beehive-shaped structure welcomed around 75 visitors on its first day back in operation, all eager to explore its unique design and ascend to its stunning viewpoint platforms, some reaching heights of up to 150 feet.
The Vessel, a popular tourist attraction since its unveiling in 2019, had faced closures due to several suicides that occurred on its premises. To address these safety concerns, the sculpture now features floor-to-ceiling mesh barriers on walkable sections, limiting access to higher levels and obstructing certain views. Despite these changes, tourists expressed their delight at being able to interact with the structure once again and capture the breathtaking cityscape views it offers.
Designed by Thomas Heatherwick and located in Hudson Yards, the Vessel’s reopening signifies a new chapter for the site, with visitors appreciating the enhanced safety measures, including netting to prevent falls. Andy Rosen, COO of Related Companies, emphasized the importance of creating a space for enjoyment and exploration while ensuring visitor safety remains a top priority.
Tourists relished the opportunity to take selfies and appreciate the play of light bouncing off nearby skyscrapers, even with some obstructed views. The unique architecture of the Vessel, with its intricate staircases and open center, provides a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors looking to immerse themselves in the urban landscape of Manhattan.
Despite some initial challenges, such as a temporary elevator outage preventing access to certain levels, visitors remained enthusiastic about their time at the Vessel. With its reopening, the sculpture offers a symbolic return to normalcy and a chance for tourists to once again appreciate its artistry and panoramic views of the city.
The Vessel is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with free admission for New York City residents on Thursdays. As visitors rediscover this iconic landmark, the new safety measures ensure that both enjoyment and security go hand in hand for all who venture to explore this architectural marvel.
