Giant Fish Believed Extinct Spotted in Mekong River
A giant fish species in the Mekong River, thought to be extinct, has been sighted three times recently, according to scientists. The massive salmon carp, a symbol of the Mekong region, can grow up to 4 feet in length with a distinctive knob at the end of its lower jaw and yellow markings around its eyes. The last confirmed sighting of this species was in 2005, leading experts to believe it had vanished from the area for decades.
Researchers at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, have been working on tracking migratory fish species since 2017. By engaging with local fishing communities and encouraging them to report any unusual sightings, they were able to locate three giant salmon carp in the Mekong River and a tributary in Cambodia between 2020 and 2023.
Bunyeth Chan, a researcher at Svay Rieng University in Cambodia, expressed excitement at seeing the fish for the first time, highlighting the hope these sightings bring for the species’ survival. The fish, also known as the “ghost fish,” symbolizes the challenges faced by migratory species in the Mekong due to industrial pollution, overfishing, and the presence of over 700 dams along the river and its tributaries with limited fish passages for navigation.
Zeb Hogan, a fish biologist at the University of Nevada, Reno, described the rediscovery as positive news but also emphasised the urgent need to address the threats to the fish’s habitat. Researchers are now looking to work with communities in Thailand and Laos to determine if the giant salmon carp still inhabits other parts of the Mekong River.
The Associated Press Health and Science Department, supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group, provided assistance in this research. The scientists involved hope that continued efforts will help protect and conserve the habitat of this rare and elusive fish species.
Insights and Summary:
The rediscovery of the giant salmon carp in the Mekong River is a significant milestone in the conservation efforts for endangered fish species. It underscores the importance of community engagement and scientific research in monitoring and protecting vulnerable aquatic ecosystems. The challenges faced by migratory fish in the Mekong, such as habitat destruction and pollution, highlight the urgent need for sustainable management practices to ensure the survival of these iconic species. Scientists and conservationists play a crucial role in raising awareness and implementing measures to safeguard the biodiversity of rivers like the Mekong.
