Three individuals have been arrested by Sri Lankan police following a threat made towards Israeli tourists visiting popular tourist destinations in the country. The elite Special Task Force (STF) in Sri Lanka has increased security measures in three tourist hotspots, including the capital Colombo, after receiving a warning from the US Embassy about a potential threat to Israeli travellers.
Minister of Public Security and Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath, confirmed the arrest of the three suspects who are currently undergoing interrogation. However, he refrained from providing further details in order to not compromise the ongoing investigation. Security has been heightened in areas such as Arugam Bay, a renowned surfing spot in the east of the country, as well as Weligama and Ella, following intelligence received from another country regarding a possible threat targeting Israeli visitors.
Although the specifics of the threat remain unclear, Mr. Herath cautioned that there might be attempts to disrupt places where Israeli nationals gather for religious activities. Israel’s national security council has advised its citizens to avoid certain tourist spots in southern Sri Lanka in light of the threat. Currently, there are 575 Israeli nationals present in Sri Lanka.
The US embassy in Sri Lanka has also issued a warning to American citizens, urging them to steer clear of the Arugam Bay area until further notice due to credible information indicating a potential attack on popular tourist locations. Stringent security measures, including roadblocks, vehicle checks, and deployment of army and navy personnel, have been implemented to ensure the safety of tourists, especially as the year-end holiday season approaches.
Sri Lanka, known for its picturesque beaches, tea plantations, and ancient temples, has been witnessing a resurgence in tourism as it emerges from a recent economic crisis. The country saw a devastating blow to its tourism industry in 2019 when multiple suicide bomb attacks targeted hotels and churches on Easter Sunday, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives. Despite this, Sri Lanka has welcomed 1.5 million tourists in the first eight months of this year, including over 20,000 visitors from Israel.
