In a tragic incident in the western state of Maharashtra, India, a 23-year-old electrician, Shashikant Ramchandra Satre, lost his life after being trampled by a wild elephant while attempting to take a selfie. The young man had been working on laying cables nearby when he and two friends heard about a wild tusker roaming in the Gadchiroli forest. Curious to catch a glimpse of the elephant, they decided to enter the forest.
Upon spotting the animal, Satre attempted to take a selfie from a distance. However, the elephant, known as CME3 by forest officials, became agitated and attacked him, ultimately trampling him to death. Fortunately, his two friends managed to escape and survive the encounter.
Described as a large and aggressive tusker, the elephant had previously been involved in the deaths of at least seven other individuals in Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Maharashtra states between November 2023 and May 2024. Forest officials have since alerted nearby villages to exercise caution, deploying staff to inform locals about the presence of wild elephants and the necessary precautions to take when encountering them.
This unfortunate incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with attempting risky stunts for the sake of capturing the perfect selfie. Selfie-related deaths have been a growing concern globally, with India having recorded the highest number of such fatalities, followed by the US and Russia.
