**Guitarist of heavy metal band Iced Earth avoids additional time behind bars in Jan. 6 case**
A heavy metal guitarist, who was part of the far-right Oath Keepers extremist group during the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, has managed to evade further imprisonment. Jon Ryan Schaffer, founder of the band Iced Earth, received a sentence of probation for his involvement in the attack. Schaffer was the first defendant related to the January 6 events to plead guilty to federal charges in 2021.
The judge overseeing his case, along with prosecutors, commended Schaffer for promptly admitting guilt and cooperating with the Justice Department’s investigation into the riot. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta emphasised Schaffer’s swift acceptance of responsibility during the sentencing at Washington’s federal courthouse, where he was handed three years of probation.
Expressing remorse before the court, Schaffer apologised to his fans for the distress and embarrassment caused by his actions, vowing not to disappoint them. In April 2021, he entered a guilty plea to obstruction of an official proceeding and entering a restricted building with a dangerous weapon. Notably, he was not involved in any pre-planning or coordination with other Oath Keepers members facing severe charges like seditious conspiracy.
Schaffer’s visit to Washington for the “Million MAGA March” in November 2020 signalled his beliefs about the election’s outcome. Wearing apparel identifying him as an “Oath Keepers Lifetime Member” on January 6, he breached the Capitol armed with bear spray, but did not engage in violent acts during his approximately 10-minute stint inside. Schaffer, who had already spent around three months in detention post-arrest, was guided by a belief in election fraud and a looming national takeover, as per his attorney, Marc Victor.
With over 1,500 individuals implicated in Capitol riot-related federal crimes, Schaffer stands among the 1,200 who have either pleaded guilty or faced trials resulting in convictions. So far, more than 1,000 defendants have been sentenced, with about two-thirds receiving imprisonment durations ranging from several days to 22 years.
