Prevent illnesses and improve gut health by changing one common mealtime habit
Cases of norovirus are on the rise in the UK, as the winter season approaches, leading to many individuals feeling unwell in the upcoming weeks. In an effort to lower the risk of catching illnesses and enhance gut health, experts recommend making a simple change to how food is chewed.
With the onset of colder temperatures, the spread of common colds and flu-like symptoms tends to increase. As cases of norovirus, also known as the “winter vomiting bug,” escalate across the UK, it is expected that many people will experience such health issues in the near future. Fortunately, there are basic adjustments in diet and lifestyle that can help strengthen gut health. A healthy gut not only aids in preventing illnesses but also supports faster recovery in case of falling sick. A well-functioning gut microbiome plays a crucial role in improving nutrient absorption, promoting a sense of fullness, and has positive effects on mental well-being. Furthermore, maintaining a healthy gut can act as a defence against chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
While consuming a variety of nutritious foods is beneficial for gut health, Dr Megan Rossi, a nutritionist and founder of The Gut Health Clinic, suggests a simpler modification: thoroughly chewing food. Dr Rossi highlights the importance of chewing in the digestion process, explaining how saliva enzymes begin breaking down food in the mouth. Research indicates that thorough chewing leads to better nutrient extraction during digestion. For instance, a study on almonds revealed that individuals who chewed them 40 times absorbed more nutrients compared to those who chewed only 10 times, resulting in better health benefits. Dr Rossi advises individuals to pay attention to their chewing habits and try to increase the number of chews per bite to improve nutrient absorption and overall health.
As norovirus continues to spread and affect many individuals, households are encouraged to take preventive measures such as boiling washing clothing and bedding this November to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. By making simple adjustments to daily habits like chewing food more thoroughly, individuals can enhance their gut health and overall well-being during the winter months and beyond.
