Two more cases of Mpox detected in UK as health chiefs give update on risk

Two more cases of Mpox have been detected in the UK, as health chiefs provide an update on the risk posed by the infectious disease. The Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed that both cases were found in household contacts of the first known case, bringing the total number of confirmed Mpox cases in the UK to three.

The latest cases involve a strain of Mpox believed to be more easily transmissible. Despite this, the UKHSA has reassured the public that the risk to the UK population “remains low.” The two patients are currently receiving specialist care at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.

The initial case was identified in London last week, involving a person who had recently returned from Africa after travelling on an overnight flight in late October. Symptoms appeared more than 24 hours after travel, with the individual developing flu-like symptoms followed by a rash that worsened over subsequent days.

The UKHSA is actively following up with contacts of all three cases, offering testing, vaccination, and necessary advice. Professor Susan Hopkins, the chief medical adviser at UKHSA, highlighted the infectious nature of Mpox within households and emphasized the importance of identifying and reaching out to contacts to mitigate further spread.

Mpox spreads through direct contact with rash, skin lesions, or bodily fluids such as saliva, snot, and through close face-to-face interactions. Common symptoms include skin rash with blisters, fever, headache, and muscle aches. The WHO has declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern due to its rapid spread.

The Clade Ib Mpox strain, circulating in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries, has raised concerns globally. The UK government is actively collaborating with international partners to prevent outbreaks and protect public health.

In summary, the recent detection of two additional Mpox cases in the UK has underscored the importance of swift and coordinated public health responses to contain the spread of infectious diseases. The diligent efforts of health authorities to trace contacts and provide necessary care and guidance are crucial in safeguarding community health and well-being. Vigilance and adherence to preventive measures remain key in mitigating the risks associated with emerging infectious diseases like Mpox.
