Mapped: Israel ordered civilians to take cover in bomb shelters as Iran launches missiles

Israeli civilians were instructed to seek refuge in bomb shelters as Iran unleashed a barrage of missiles, prompting widespread alarm across the country. Air raid sirens blared, and explosions could be heard in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley as families hurried to take cover. Images captured the tense moments as people sought safety under vehicles and bridges while reporters on state television went prone during live broadcasts.

According to reports from the Israel Defence Forces, approximately 10 million civilians were at risk of being hit by Iranian projectiles. Israeli army radio stated that around 200 missiles were launched from Iran, with the IDF spokesperson confirming no immediate injuries. Fortunately, less than an hour later, civilians were given the all-clear to leave the protected spaces.

The Revolutionary Guards of Iran claimed responsibility for launching numerous missiles at Israel, warning of severe repercussions if Israel retaliated. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, authorised the missile strike, emphasising Iran’s readiness for any counterattacks. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and King Abdullah II of Jordan have been in communication with Sir Keir Starmer, who is engaging with international leaders and allies to address the escalating situation.

Amidst the unfolding crisis, the United States has pledged support to assist Israel in defending against the missile attacks. President Joe Biden affirmed the US commitment to protecting American personnel in the region during discussions with Vice President Kamala Harris and national security officials. Tensions escalated further as Iran vowed to retaliate following strikes that targeted Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon. The Israeli engagement in Lebanon marked a significant escalation in regional conflicts, drawing parallels to previous clashes in Gaza.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, UK assets in Cyprus stand ready to support Israel’s defence against potential threats. With fears of escalating violence looming, global leaders are working to prevent further destabilisation in the region. Stay updated for more developments on this evolving situation.
