Drug addict sentenced to two years in prison for theft of over £100,000 worth of equipment
A man identified as Ian Brown, a cocaine addict, has been given a two-year jail term for stealing equipment valued at more than £100,000 from a contracting business. Brown targeted the same depot multiple times within a two-week timeframe, making away with two trailers and plant machinery. The 38-year-old father justified his actions by claiming he needed to settle a drug debt running into thousands of pounds. The thefts occurred at Enerveo in Newhouse between December 6 and 21 the previous year.
Despite extensive investigations by the police, none of the stolen items were recovered. Aga Mathieson, the prosecutor, informed Hamilton Sheriff Court that Brown was identified through his DNA and fingerprints. When charged, the accused remained unresponsive. In addition to the theft at Enerveo, Brown also confessed to stealing fuel worth £1,300 at a reservoir near Strathaven and taking a vehicle and plant equipment from a windfarm at Coalburn.
Brown’s defence solicitor, Stephen MacBride, explained to the court that his client’s life had spiraled into chaos due to his cocaine addiction, leading him to accrue significant debts. He described Brown’s decision to commit the offences as misguided. Sheriff Michael Higgins, taking Brown’s past convictions into account, remarked that the series of thefts were acts of serious dishonesty resulting in substantial financial losses to various parties. The Sheriff deemed custody as the only viable consequence.
