Cruel Scots Foster Carer Who Abused Children Avoids Jail
A foster carer from Scotland, Angela Hassan, has been found guilty of three charges of abusing vulnerable young children but managed to avoid being sent to prison. Angela Hassan, formerly known as Deeney, perpetrated a campaign of abuse against three children over nearly two decades. The 78-year-old from Motherwell received the verdict following a trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court on October 15, 2024.
Hassan’s despicable acts took place between 1971 and 1990 when the children, aged between five and 11, were under her care. The abuse came to light during a police investigation into child abuse at Smyllum Park orphanage in Lanark. One victim, who had been at the orphanage before living with Hassan in Wishaw, was subjected to physical violence such as having her head hit against a wall and being punched on the head and body. The foster carer even forced the child to put used sanitary towels into a coal fire in front of others.
Another victim, a young boy, experienced repeated violent assaults from Hassan including being hit with objects like a slipper, a branch, and a belt. She also forcibly fed him and humiliated him for wetting the bed. The third victim also suffered physical abuse and humiliation, with Hassan denying the necessity for sanitary products.
Despite her heinous actions, on November 15, Hassan was given a Community Payback Order as an alternative to a custodial sentence. She must complete 300 hours of unpaid work within 15 months and will be under supervision for the same period.
Les Brown, Procurator Fiscal for South Strathclyde, condemned Hassan’s betrayal of trust and exploitation of vulnerable children. He commended the courage of the victims for coming forward and urged other victims of similar crimes to speak out.
