Tory contenders are taking a page out of Tony Blair’s playbook with a plan to revamp the Conservative Party under the banner of a ‘New Conservative Party’. Following the party’s worst defeat in its 346-year history, frontrunner Robert Jenrick and rival Tom Tugendhat are set to present the case for a fresh start akin to Blair’s ‘New Labour’ resurgence in 1997.
Drawing inspiration from Blair’s successful strategy, the leadership candidates, also including Kemi Badenoch and James Cleverly, will unveil their perspectives at the Tory conference in Birmingham. While Jenrick and Tugendhat aim to emulate Blair’s tactics, Badenoch plans to dismantle his legacy, and Cleverly looks to infuse hope and optimism into the party.

Rejecting decline management, Tugendhat champions a Conservative ethos built on national pride and forward-thinking policies.
Conversely, Badenoch challenges the status quo by advocating for dismantling the frameworks established by Blair and Brown. She stresses the need for a pro-wealth creation stance, highlighting its role in supporting essential services and aiding the most vulnerable in society. Rejecting a narrative of decline, she asserts the Conservatives’ role as champions of economic prosperity.
Cleverly, drawing inspiration from US president Ronald Reagan, champions a positive and relatable Conservatism that focuses on the party’s achievements and future potential. He stresses the importance of honesty and professionalism in winning back voters, underscoring the party’s commitment to Conservative values and a bright future.
