Fugees rapper Pras has filed a lawsuit against his bandmate Lauryn Hill for fraud regarding the group’s shortened 2023 reunion tour. Pras, whose real name is Prakazrel Michel, alleges that Hill took advantage of his criminal conviction to impose unfair contract terms on him. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, claims that Hill exploited his situation after a federal criminal case and forced him to accept unfavourable terms, subsequently hiding financial information and defrauding him.
The 2023 tour was meant to commemorate Hill’s iconic 1998 album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” and to feature a reunion of the Fugees, comprising Hill, Pras, and Wyclef Jean. The lawsuit explicitly points out that the true attraction of the tour was the reunion itself, rather than Hill’s solo performance, and highlights Hill’s insistence on diminishing the Fugees’ billing in favour of her own name.
In response to the lawsuit, Hill has declared the claims as “baseless,” citing Pras’s failure to repay substantial loans she provided as goodwill gestures, amounting to $3 million. She maintains that the tour was initially planned as a solo endeavour to celebrate her album, with the inclusion of the Fugees stemming from her awareness of Pras’s financial troubles and the need to support his legal defence.
Pras’s legal troubles began in April of the previous year when he was found guilty on various counts related to political conspiracies involving multimillion-dollar schemes spanning two presidential administrations. The lawsuit highlights Pras’s need for legal representation following his attorney’s guilty plea for leaking grand jury information to the press. It alleges that Hill misrepresented financial details and unilaterally altered terms, resulting in an unfair distribution of tour proceeds.
The lawsuit seeks to invalidate the tour contract, demand a financial audit, and pursue both compensatory and punitive damages to be determined during the trial. The legal battle between the former Fugees bandmates underscores the complexity and strain within the once-revered hip-hop group.
