Fat Bear Week 2024 has taken a grim turn as a fatal bear fight was captured on camera at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. The annual tradition, which celebrates the beginning of the hibernation season, involves a bracket-style competition where fans can vote for their favourite and fattest bear. However, this year’s event faced a delay after a tragic incident between two Alaskan grizzlies.
The fight occurred between two bears, one male named 402 or “Patches” and one female also named 402, along the Brooks River where the livestream caught the violent encounter. Tragically, the male bear 402 lost his life during the altercation. Mike Fritz from Explore.org, the host of Fat Bear Week, addressed the situation during a livestream, announcing the postponement of the voting for this year’s competition.
According to reports, the fight was likely sparked by a dispute over food, highlighting the reality of the risks and challenges faced by bears in the wild. Park ranger Sarah Bruce shared that while bear aggression intensifies before hibernation as they try to consume as much food as possible, fatal confrontations between bears are uncommon. The duration of this particular brawl, lasting 20 minutes, was noted to be unusually prolonged.
The voting for Fat Bear Week 2024, initially set to begin on September 30, has now been rescheduled to October 1, with the winner to be determined on October 8. This event, which started in 2014 as Fat Bear Tuesday, aims to celebrate the park’s brown bears and the thriving ecosystem of Brooks River. Each year, a tournament-style bracket is created, allowing the public to vote for their favourite bear.
In 2023, bear 128 Grazer emerged victorious in a thrilling finale against bear 32 Chunk, garnering over 100,000 votes. The competition has gained immense popularity, with the park rangers setting up engaging matchups between the bears for the public to participate in the voting process. Despite the recent tragic incident, the spirit of celebrating these magnificent creatures will continue to resonate during Fat Bear Week.
