Domestic abuse incidents in Stirling have hit a 10-year high, with figures soaring by 30 per cent, according to a report by Police Scotland. The latest statistics show that in the Stirling Council area, there were 1,015 instances of domestic abuse reported to the police in 2023/24, marking a significant increase from 785 incidents in 2014/15.
In contrast, Clackmannanshire saw a less than four per cent rise in reported incidents over the same period. The reported incidents in Stirling during 2023/24 spiked by almost 13 per cent compared to the previous year, with 899 incidents recorded in 2022/23.
Of the 1,015 recorded incidents in Stirling in 2023/24, only 39 per cent involved a crime or offence, while in Clackmannanshire, the number was even lower at 37 per cent. Police Scotland defines domestic abuse as any form of physical, verbal, sexual, psychological, or financial abuse that may constitute criminal conduct within a relationship.
Nationally, the number of police-recorded domestic abuse incidents in Scotland rose to 63,867 in 2023/24, a three per cent increase from the previous year. The majority of victims (83 per cent) were female, with 81 per cent of incidents involving a female victim and a male suspect. Seventeen per cent of victims were male, while 15 per cent of incidents involved a male victim and a female suspect. In three per cent of cases, the victim and suspected perpetrator were of the same gender.
