In India, as the climate warms, scientists are under increasing pressure to develop tougher seeds. The unpredictable rains and rising heat are not only affecting the residents of villages like Rayanpet but also having a significant impact on the acres of rice grown in the region. Farmers like P. Ravinder Reddy are witnessing drastic changes in weather patterns that are making traditional farming practices challenging.

Reddy, a former soldier turned farmer, has been experimenting with newer rice seed varieties that have been engineered to withstand the changing climate conditions. These new seeds are proving to be more resilient, requiring less water, and displaying better disease resistance. Although there is still demand for older seed varieties, Reddy anticipates that in a few years, the shift towards these tougher seeds will be inevitable.

India, being one of the world’s leading producers and consumers of wheat and rice, has a critical need for seeds that can cope with the effects of climate change. Research organisations in India, along with global counterparts, have been working tirelessly to develop seeds that can boost yields, resist drought, and combat plant diseases exacerbated by the shifting climate.

The urgency for resilient seeds is further highlighted by a recent United Nations report, which revealed that over 700 million people worldwide suffered from hunger last year. This alarming statistic underscores the importance of producing food reliably to meet the needs of the growing global population. Programs, including those supported by the United States government and private initiatives, are also aiding in the development of climate-resilient crops in various regions across the globe.

In response to the escalating climate challenges, India has taken significant steps to ensure food security by introducing climate-resilient seeds across different crop varieties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled a range of climate-resilient seeds encompassing cereals, pulses, and oilseeds. The government plans to dedicate at least 25% of paddy fields to these resilient seeds in the upcoming crop seasons.

The push towards climate-resilient seeds is not just about stabilising yields but also about improving the nutritional quality of crops. Scientists and experts emphasise the necessity of ensuring that these seeds reach a wide range of farmers and are accompanied by proper training on their effective utilisation. Additionally, adequate funding for research and development in agriculture is deemed crucial to further bolster efforts in seed development and distribution.

As Reddy gears up for the winter planting season, he remains optimistic about expanding the cultivation of climate-resilient seeds on his farm. He underscores the importance of continued innovation in seed development and hopes for government support in ensuring fair prices for crops post-harvest. In the face of climate change challenges, the adoption of tougher seeds holds the promise of a more sustainable and secure future for farmers and food production in India.
