Tennis icon Jamie Murray has expressed his immense pride after being awarded an honorary doctorate from Stirling University. The Daily Record reported that the seven-time Grand Slam champion received the honour for his significant contributions to Scottish and UK tennis during Stirling’s winter graduation ceremony. Growing up near the university in Dunblane, Jamie and his brother Andy began their tennis journey under the guidance of their mother Judy, who coached them.
Returning to the Scottish National Tennis Centre, where they trained as youngsters, Jamie collected his degree alongside over 400 graduates. Apart from his Grand Slam victories, Jamie has also claimed the Davis Cup and previously held the rank of world number one. In recognition of his achievements, Jamie was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016.
Following the ceremony, Jamie expressed his pride and gratitude, highlighting the significance of returning to the place where he started his tennis career. Stirling University, known as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence, has also honoured Judy and Andy Murray in the past. Professor Sir Gerry McCormac, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling, commended Jamie and another honouree for their lasting impacts on society.
In total, over 1,000 students graduated from Stirling University that week, with ceremonies celebrating their academic successes. The recognition of Jamie Murray and his fellow honouree serves as inspiration for graduating students, showcasing the potential to make a positive difference in their respective fields. With Jamie’s continued dedication to tennis and charity work, his honorary doctorate further solidifies his legacy in the sporting world.
