Abbey McCormack, a former care assistant at Redmill Nursing Home in Bathgate, West Lothian, has been removed from her position for allegedly stealing cigarettes from a vulnerable resident. The incident, which occurred around October 29 and October 30, 2023, involved McCormack taking cigarettes from Resident AA, leading to her fitness to practise being deemed as “impaired”.
The Scottish Social Services Council carried out a review of the situation and determined the behaviour to be “serious”, describing it as an “abuse of trust”. The review highlighted that McCormack’s actions caused financial harm to the resident and jeopardised the relationship between the resident, other carers, and the resident’s family. The Council emphasised the importance of social service workers being truthful, open, honest, and trustworthy, and noted that dishonest behaviour like stealing can have long-lasting consequences.
A spokesperson for Redmill Nursing Home emphasised that kindness and integrity are core values of the facility and that such behaviour is not tolerated. They confirmed that McCormack was suspended following the incident and has not returned to work since. The spokesperson expressed gratitude towards the Scottish Social Services Council for taking decisive action to maintain the essential standards expected of all care workers.
