Central Scotland Green MSP Gillian Mackay has voiced her support for her party’s proposal to implement a £2 cap on bus fares in Lanarkshire. Mackay emphasized that this cap would lead to substantial savings for regular commuters and enhance accessibility to local bus services in the region. The Green Party is advocating for the Scottish Government to trial this initiative in the upcoming budget with the aim of making public transport more cost-effective and sustaining bus services.
The proposal follows the success of providing free bus travel for individuals under 22, which has resulted in over 730,000 young people taking advantage of more than 140 million free bus journeys since its introduction in 2022. MSP Gillian Mackay highlighted that a fare cap would not only benefit commuters in Lanarkshire but also help in lowering pollution levels by encouraging more people to opt for bus travel instead of using private cars.

The government, through Transport Scotland, has affirmed its commitment to garnering support across Parliament to finalise the forthcoming budget.
