Plans for a new McDonald’s drive-thru in Dumfries have hit a roadblock as Dumfries and Galloway Council bosses have recommended refusal for the proposed location on Annan Road. The fast-food chain giant had plans in motion for a £4 million drive-thru at the Annan Road site. However, a report prepared for the upcoming planning applications committee meeting advises against the proposal, suggesting that a more suitable location may be available instead.
The concerns raised over the Annan Road site include potential issues with car access versus pedestrian access, as well as fears of a negative visual impact on the area. McDonald’s had identified the Annan Road site near the Premier Inn on the outskirts of Dumfries as a prime location for their new drive-thru, promising to create 120 jobs along with facilities such as parking spaces, electric vehicle charging bays, and recycling facilities.
Despite receiving nearly 50 letters of support for the development, including mentions of job creation and land revitalisation, there have been eight objections to the proposal. These objections cite concerns about environmental impact, increased traffic, noise, and the saturation of fast food options in Dumfries.
The recommendation to refuse the plans is based on the availability of a potentially more suitable location at Peel Centre retail park, which recently obtained approval for a drive-thru development. This alternative site aligns with McDonald’s requirement for a new outlet to be over 1.5km away from their existing location on Lochside Road, promoting a more sustainable and locally accessible approach.
The Peel Centre location is considered more favourable as it supports the concept of “local living” by providing essential amenities within a reasonable distance for residents. The council’s case officer, Claire Eckstein, emphasised that the proposed Annan Road location would heavily rely on car visits, lacking proximity to public transport links and cycle paths.
Despite no objections from Transport Scotland or the council’s roads team, the recommendation stands on the grounds of visual impact and sustainable development principles. The planning committee is set to deliberate on the matter, with the expectation that the plans for the Annan Road drive-thru will be refused.
