A man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after being found guilty of engaging in a sexual encounter with a teenage girl. Darren McCulloch, 26, engaged in unlawful sexual activity with the girl in a park in Wishaw after chatting with her online. The girl’s parents discovered a large number of messages and intimate images on her phone, leading to McCulloch’s arrest.
Hamilton Sheriff Court imposed the sentence on McCulloch, who is from Kirkintilloch, and he will be supervised for 18 months after his release. Additionally, he is required to be on the sex offenders’ register for a period of 10 years. McCulloch admitted to having sexual communication with a child and engaging in sexual activity with her in 2022.
The court heard that the relationship between McCulloch and the girl started when she sent messages to random contacts using someone else’s phone. McCulloch responded, and despite knowing the girl’s young age, they continued exchanging messages. The communication escalated to include sexual content, leading to a physical meeting in September 2022.
Following the encounter, the girl’s family noticed changes in her behavior and discovered the explicit messages on her phone. Concerned, they reported the matter to the police, who found over 15,000 WhatsApp messages between McCulloch and the girl, as well as communication via Facetime and Snapchat.
McCulloch’s defence solicitor stated that he had no prior convictions and acknowledged the seriousness of the offence. In addition to the prison sentence, Sheriff Liam Murphy issued a non-harassment order preventing McCulloch from contacting the girl for five years.
The case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by online predators targeting vulnerable teenagers. Parents are urged to monitor their children’s online activities closely to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
