Inspectors have concluded that follow-up action will be necessary at a nursery in Motherwell. Education Scotland recently sent a letter to parents and carers of children attending the private Windmill Nursery, detailing the results of an inspection conducted in October.
The inspection report highlighted that learning, teaching, and assessment, as well as securing children’s progress, were rated as “weak”, which is the second-lowest score on Education Scotland’s scale. Five other criteria were deemed “adequate” by the Care Inspectorate, indicating that strengths slightly outweigh weaknesses.
While children were observed to enjoy attending and playing outdoors, and staff demonstrated a kind and caring approach, inspectors recommended more engagement with children, improved progress in literacy and numeracy, better planning, and the promotion of relationships to facilitate friendship-building among children.
The report also emphasised the need for practitioners to undergo further training and guidance to support children in managing their emotions, resolving disagreements calmly, and showing empathy towards others. Inspectors suggested that practitioners should enhance their understanding of children’s progress in different curriculum areas and develop consistent ways to measure and record this progress accurately.
Regarding communication, language, literacy, numeracy, and mathematics, the report indicated areas for improvement in providing learning experiences and resources to enhance children’s progress. Additionally, the Care Inspectorate mandated that staff competency and skills must be assured by March 31, including increased understanding of children’s needs, training implementation, improved induction processes, and adherence to good practice guidelines.
Education Scotland will collaborate with North Lanarkshire Council to schedule an additional visit within six months. Families will receive an update following this follow-up visit to the nursery in question.
