Despite their frantic efforts to evacuate, the family could only salvage some money before witnessing their house succumb to the force of the floodwaters within minutes.
The tragic events unfolded on a fateful Saturday, Sept. 28, with the rainfall continuing unabated for another day, triggering landslides and floods across areas surrounding Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The region experienced an unprecedented deluge, with over 10 inches of rainfall drenching the Kathmandu Valley in just two days – nearly 20% of the monthly average.
In the aftermath, the Bagmati River breached its banks in Kathmandu, submerging low-lying areas and displacing vulnerable residents living in temporary shelters. Urban dwellings were left buried under layers of mud and debris, with tree limbs strewn across the landscape and buildings damaged beyond repair.
As the sun eventually made its appearance on Monday, Bishworaj and his wife, Sharmila, returned to their ravaged home in a bid to salvage whatever belongings remained intact. The extent of the devastation became painfully evident as they sifted through the debris, with Sharmila desperately searching for any surviving cooking utensils amidst the wreckage.
Meanwhile, efforts were underway in the capital to clear roads and restore infrastructure, with earthmovers deployed to extricate vehicles trapped in the mire left behind by the receding floodwaters. The damage to key highways leading to Kathmandu exacerbated the situation, leading to traffic congestion and disruptions in the supply chain.
