A group of Manchester United fans have been arrested in a dawn raid operation following a violent altercation earlier this season. The incident occurred before Man United’s Europa League match against FC Twente in September, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The match was significant as it was one of Erik ten Hag’s final games in charge before he was sacked due to poor results the following month.
The violence erupted when two groups of around 40 balaclava-clad individuals clashed in Lower Broughton, Salford, the day before the match. Witnesses reported that no weapons were used, and the confrontation was a bare-knuckle fight. Police were called to the scene, but the trouble continued at a Manchester pub.
As a result of the investigation by specialist operations police officers, dawn raids were conducted on homes on Wednesday, December 11. Ten high-risk supporters were identified and arrested, ranging in age from 20 to 64. During the raids, two separate cannabis farms were also discovered, leading to the arrest of a 36-year-old woman on suspicion of cultivation.
The arrested individuals are expected to be held for 24 hours before being released on bail with strict conditions, likely preventing them from attending the upcoming Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson emphasised that organised violence, whether football-related or not, would not be tolerated.
Chief Superintendent Colette Rose stated that such actions do not represent the majority of fans who attend matches peacefully. The police force is committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining peace during upcoming football fixtures. Manchester United is scheduled to face Viktoria Plzen in a European match before the derby against Manchester City on Sunday.
In conclusion, the recent arrests of Manchester United fans following a violent clash with rivals serve as a strong reminder that violence of any kind will not be tolerated. It is crucial for football matches and events to be enjoyed peacefully and safely by all supporters involved. Law enforcement agencies are taking proactive measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the well-being of the community.
