Restoration of Historic Christie Clock in Stirling Marks a Commitment to the People
Stirling Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Gerry McGarvey, expressed that the restoration of the historic Christie Clock, which was destroyed in a failed repair attempt in September 2023, is a gesture of “honouring our commitment to the people of Stirling.” The council members voted to allocate £873,000 towards the repair of the clock, showcasing a dedication to preserving the city’s heritage.
At a recent full meeting of the Stirling Council, councillors unanimously approved the decision to rebuild the iconic Christie Clock by restoring the column, plinth, and clock head using as much of the existing stonework as possible, in a sympathetic manner. The total cost for the restoration includes £678,460 for repair, £95,000 for fees, and a £100,000 contingency fund, amounting to £873,460.
Under consideration were three alternative options with varying costs ranging from £33,800 to £827,850. Conservation advisors have devised a phased delivery programme, aiming for the completion of the reconstruction by October 2026. The Christie Clock, designated as a C-listed structure and erected in 1905 as a tribute to former Stirling Provost George Christie, was severely damaged during the previous repair mishap, sparking dismay among the local community.
Deputy Leader Gerry McGarvey acknowledged the emotional significance attached to the clock and reiterated the council’s obligation to reinstate it fully. The salvaged stonework from the clock, removed in September 2023, has been securely stored pending the restoration process.
