Scottish kingpin Jamie Stevenson, also known as “Iceman,” attempted to emulate the fictional US mobster Tony Soprano when plain clothed officers arrived to arrest him. Stevenson, who has been dubbed “Scotland’s Tony Soprano,” made a daring escape attempt by fleeing down an embankment at the Sherbrooke Castle Hotel in Glasgow on June 12, 2020. Believing he was being targeted by a rival gang for assassination, Stevenson tried to evade the officers but ended up falling to the bottom of the embankment where he was apprehended.
Similar to a scene from the HBO drama “The Sopranos,” where Tony Soprano falls down an embankment during an FBI arrest but manages to escape, Stevenson’s escape bid was short-lived as under-cover officers quickly handcuffed him. Despite Stevenson’s initial fear of being shot, he was relieved to find out he was only being arrested. Stevenson subsequently fled to Spain and then the Netherlands but was eventually arrested again while out jogging in 2022.
Gerry Mclean, the NCA’s Regional Head of Investigations, explained that Stevenson’s flight response indicated his immediate fear of a potential gangland hit upon seeing the plain clothed officers approaching. The coordinated efforts of the NCA and Police Scotland’s organised crime squad led to Stevenson’s arrest at the Sherbrooke Castle Hotel as part of Operation Pepperoni, which uncovered his involvement in a significant drug smuggling operation.
Stevenson, along with five other gang members, including David Bilsland, Paul Bowes, Gerard Carbin, Ryan McPhee, and Lloyd Cross, admitted to various drug charges at the High Court in Glasgow. Stevenson pleaded guilty to directing a drug trafficking network that spanned the UK, Spain, Ecuador, and Abu Dhabi, involving the importation of cocaine and the production and supply of etizolam pills.
Other accomplices also pleaded guilty to charges related to organized crime and drug offenses, highlighting the extensive operation overseen by Stevenson. The arrests and subsequent convictions marked a significant victory in dismantling a major drug smuggling network that operated across multiple countries.
The arrest of Stevenson and his associates shed light on the intricate web of international drug trafficking and organized crime activities that law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to combat. The successful prosecution of Stevenson and his gang members serves as a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of investigators in tackling serious criminal enterprises that pose a threat to society.
