Scots pensioner, 81, with no family near home takes anti-depressants to combat loneliness

A lonely 81-year-old Scottish pensioner, Emma Chrichton, who resides in Balerno, has resorted to taking anti-depressants to combat the overwhelming feelings of loneliness caused by having no family nearby. Emma, who lost her husband seven years ago and has her three children living in Pitlochry, East Kilbride, and Hertfordshire, expressed how challenging it is to spend weekends alone, especially since they used to be a cherished family time. Emma highlighted that the lack of family presence in Edinburgh, where she currently lives, has intensified her sense of isolation, particularly during winter evenings when she is left with no one to talk to.

The impact of the pandemic further exacerbated Emma’s feelings of loneliness, leading her to start taking anti-depressants this year. She described how the restrictions prevented her from socializing and left her feeling a lack of confidence in various aspects of her life, including driving. However, since beginning the medication, Emma has noticed an improvement in her mood and overall well-being. To combat her loneliness, Emma now participates in a Sunday tea social organised by a charity called Re-Engage, aimed at tackling isolation among older individuals. This monthly gathering has provided Emma with the opportunity to make new friends and have something to look forward to on Sundays.

Attending these social events, along with the support of anti-depressants, has significantly enhanced Emma’s happiness and sense of connectedness. Despite her initial reservations about her essential tremor, which she feared might cause embarrassment, Emma has found comfort and enjoyment in the company of others during the Re-Engage gatherings. Reflecting on her experience, Emma expressed gratitude for the newfound sense of companionship and joy these outings have brought into her life.

In conclusion, Emma’s story sheds light on the profound impact of loneliness, especially among older individuals living without family nearby. Through a combination of medication, social engagement, and community support, Emma has found solace and happiness, underscoring the importance of addressing and combatting loneliness in our society.
